Missouri Pro-Second Amendment Legislation Making Progress In The State Legislature!

Friday, April 6, 2007

The 2007 General Assembly session continues with pro-Second Amendment measures advancing in both chambers in Jefferson City.  On Thursday, April 5, the Senate Agriculture Committee passed Senate Bill 225 by a vote of 6-1. SB225, sponsored by Senator Bill Stouffer (R-21), protects critical wildlife habitat from unchecked development, and prohibits localities from banning the discharge of firearms in certain wetland areas. There is a good chance that SB225 will be on the Senate floor as early as next week. Please contact your Senator and strongly encourage him or her to support and vote for SB225 in its current form!

Also this week, Senate Bill 257, “Emergency Powers” legislation, sponsored by Senator Kevin Engler (R-3), was passed by the House Special Committee on General Laws and will likely be on heard on the House floor as early as Wednesday, April 11. This important legislation prohibits any government agency from suspending your Second Amendment rights during an emergency or disaster.  Additionally, "Castle Doctrine" legislation, Senate Bill 62, sponsored by Senator Jack Goodman (R-29) was also passed by the House Special Committee on General Laws and will likely be heard on the House floor at some point during the week of April 9. Please contact your Representative and strongly encourage him or her to support and vote for SB257 and SB62 when they reach the House floor!

Finally, House Bill 462, sponsored by Representative Brian Munzlinger (R-1), was passed by the House on Wednesday, April 4 by an overwhelmingly bi-partisan vote of 146-16! This important bill will repeal Missouri's outdated and redundant statute that requires law-abiding Missourians to first obtain a "permit to acquire" before purchasing a handgun.  This important measure now heads to the Senate for its consideration.
