Governor Jindal Signs Bill Aiding Visually Impaired Hunters in Louisiana!

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

NRA backed House Bill 39, introduced by State Representative Henry Burns (R-9), was signed into law by Governor Bobby Jindal (R) on Monday, July 6.  This new law will authorize the use of laser scopes by visually impaired hunters. HB39 will be effective on August 15, 2009.

Currently, visually-impaired hunters are accompanied by sighted persons who help to identify game and engage in the daunting task of gazing over the hunter’s shoulder and making a best guess as to whether the visually-impaired hunter’s rifle or handgun is properly aligned to ensure a clean and humane harvest.  HB39 makes great strides toward eliminating the guesswork for visually-impaired hunters and their partners; guesswork that is never faced by sighted hunters looking through the crystal clear glass of their riflescopes.

Allowing for the use of laser sighting devices will provide visually-impaired hunters a far greater degree of certainty.  It will also result in higher success rates and possibly encourage more visually-impaired citizens to enjoy hunting in the “Sportsman’s Paradise.”

At this time no action is required, but please continue to check your email and www.nraila.org for updates.
