Indiana's Governor Signs Monumental Pro-Gun Reform!

Friday, March 19, 2010

On Thursday, March 18, Governor Mitch Daniels (R) signed House Bill 1065 – Indiana’s emergency powers/parking lot bill – into law. This NRA priority bill protects Hoosiers against firearm confiscation during natural disasters, such as occurred in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. HB1065 also prevents law-abiding gun owners from being wrongfully terminated from their jobs for having locked firearms in their vehicles while at work.

Indiana State Senator Johnny Nugent (R-43) and State Representative Bob Bischoff (D-68) sponsored the emergency powers/parking lot legislation. After years of attempts to pass each bill seperately, the joint legislation passed with overwhelming, bi-partisan majorities in both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly. The Indiana House passed the measure 76-21 while the Senate passed the bill 41-9.

The National Rifle Association would like to thank Senator Nugent and Representative Bischoff for their tremendous efforts to pass both important pro-gun protections.

As one of the most controversial pieces of legislation heard in the Indiana General Assembly in 2010, and due to the intense fight by the Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana Manufacturers’ Association and other big business interests, HB1065 required a solid team of legislators working in both the House and Senate. NRA would like to thank that strong team of pro-gun legislators who worked overtime to see HB1065 through to passage and to the Governor’s desk.

Please send a note of thanks to the following Indiana State Legislators:
