Pennsylvania: Philadelphia Does it Again!

Crucial Opportunity Must Be Taken!

Late yesterday, Philadelphia’s City Council passed Legislative File 100722, a measure to close the so-called “Florida Gun Loophole” by a 17 to 0 vote.  LF 100722 states that Philadelphia will not recognize out-of-state carry licenses held by Pennsylvania residents, unless the individual also holds a Pennsylvania concealed carry license.  This proposal not only violates Pennsylvania’s state firearms preemption but also potentially turns law-abiding gun-owners who are living and traveling in Philadelphia into criminals.

Contrary to what is being suggested there is no “Florida Gun Loophole.”  This fictional term makes it sound like anyone who applies for an out-of-state concealed carry permit is committing a crime.  This is not the case.  Florida and other states that allow non-residents to apply for a concealed carry permit must follow the state’s concealed carry law.  For example, Florida requires applicants to submit fingerprints, provide proof of competency with a firearm, pass a criminal and mental health background check and pay the appropriate fee.  In fact, the Pennsylvania Senate voted down a similar measure last year.

According to local news reports LF 100722 will be recalled and amended with undisclosed language and reconsidered at the next city council meeting on February 17.  We must take advantage of this opportunity to stop LF 100722 by flooding calls into the Philadelphia City Council and your state legislators urging them to OPPOSE LF 100722.  Let them know that LF 100722 doesn’t stop criminals it only turns law-abiding Pennsylvanians into criminals.  Also, urge your family, friends and fellow gun owners to call the city council and their state legislators to OPPOSE LF 100722.

If you are a resident of Philadelphia, it is crucial that you call the Mayor and your District AND At-Large city council members TODAY and urge him or her to oppose LF 100722.

Call your state legislators today and urge him or her to help stop the unwarranted attacks by the Philadelphia City Council.  For contact information or help identifying your state legislator, please click here.

The law-abiding citizens of Philadelphia need your help!
