Key Pro-Gun Measures Continue to Advance in Carson City

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Three important policy measures have advanced within the last week as the 2011 legislative session in Carson City moves past its halfway mark.

Assembly Bill 217, introduced by Assemblyman John Ellison (R-33), passed in the Senate Labor and Commerce Committee by a unanimous vote. AB 217 is a much-needed economic shot in the arm for Nevada's Federal Firearms Licensees since it would allow residents of non-contiguous states to purchase long guns in Nevada. In addition, it would allow Nevada residents to purchase long guns in non-contiguous states. This would bring Nevada in line with the protections provided by the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986, which allows the interstate sale of long guns by federally licensed firearms dealers. This bill now heads for a vote in the state Senate, so please contact your state Senator and ask that he or she support AB 217.  For contact information or help identifying your state Senator click here.

Joining AB 217 are two measures introduced by Senator Don Gustavson (R-Washoe County, No. 2). Senate Bill 175 would ensure that the names of Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permit holders would be confidential and Senate Bill 279 would mandate that a background investigation be conducted on all right-to-carry permit renewals for the re-instatement of the NICS exemption for permit holders. Both SB 175 and SB 279 passed in the state Senate by a unanimous vote and will be heard soon in the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Please contact members of the committee and respectfully urge them to support SB 175 and SB 279.  Contact information for the committee can be found below.
