In one of the most successful pro-gun legislative sessions in the Hoosier State’s recent history, the Indiana General Assembly passed and Governor Mitch Daniels signed into law five new NRA-supported firearm bills!
As of July 1, Hoosiers will:
- Be protected from employer anti-gun workplace discrimination;
- Have the ability to purchase a long gun in any state that allows such sales;
- Transport a firearm to a shooting range without a state-issued permit;
- Know that wherever they travel throughout Indiana, the same firearm laws and freedoms apply evenly across local boundaries; and
- Carry a loaded firearm on their person on off-road vehicles on private property.
Senate Enrolled Act 506, the “Transport Permit Reform” bill, passed in the Senate by a 43 to 7 vote and in the House by an 84 to 13 vote. SEA 506 was authored by state Senator Jim Tomes (R-49) and sponsored in the House by Representative Heath VanNatter (R-38). This bill was signed into law by Governor Daniels on May 10.

Senate Enrolled Act 292, the “Firearm Preemption Reform” bill, passed in the General Assembly on the final day of the 2011 legislative session. SEA 292 was approved 40 to 10 in the Senate and 70 to 24 in the House. Governor Daniels signed this bill on Tuesday, May 10. SEA 292 was authored by state Senator Jim Tomes (R-49) and sponsored by Representative Mike Speedy (R-90).

On April 26, Governor Daniels signed into law Senate Enrolled Act 94, the “Non-Contiguous State Firearm Purchase” bill. SEA 94 was authored by state Senator Travis Holdman (R-19) and sponsored in the House by state Representative Matthew Lehman (R-79).

Governor Daniels also signed into law Senate Enrolled Act 411, the “Parking Lot 2.0” bill, on April 15. Authored by NRA Board Member and state Senator Johnny Nugent (R-43) and sponsored in the House by state Representative Sean Eberhart (R-57), SEA 411 protects Hoosier employees from workplace anti-gun discrimination.

On April 20, Governor Daniels signed into law Senate Enrolled Act 154, which allows loaded firearms on off-road vehicles on private property if the person carrying the firearm owns or has permission to be on the property. Authored in the Senate by state Senator Brent Steele (R-44) and sponsored in the House by Representative Sean Eberhart (R-57), this bill passed in the Senate by a 45 to1 vote and in the House by an 83 to 6 vote.
