Major Nevada Law Enforcement Group Supports Campus Carry

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Recently, the Nevada State Law Enforcement Officer's Association (NSLEOA) has announced it support for Senate Bill 231, the Nevada Campus Protection Act.  The NSLEOA sent an e-mail message to the Nevada Senate asking them to move this bill forward and indicated that should it be sent to the Assembly, they will lobby for its passage.

Introduced by state Senator John Lee (D-1), SB 231 would allow individuals who hold a Concealed Carry Weapons permit to carry their firearm on the property of the Nevada System of Higher Education without first gaining permission from the university president, which is currently mandated by statue.  It has been a long-held policy within the campus administration to not allow permit holders to carry, which has created an environment where students, faculty and staff are left defenseless in “gun-free” zones.

The Nevada State Law Enforcement Officer's Association represents law enforcement officers and support staff from twenty-two state and local agencies throughout the Silver State, including the Attorney General Investigators, the DMV Criminal Enforcement Division, the Department of Public Safety's Highway Patrol and Investigations Unit, the University Police Departments for University of Nevada Las Vegas, University of Nevada Reno, and Truckee Meadows Community College.

Joining the NSLEOA in support are four Nevada county sheriffs:  Ben Trotter from Churchill County, Tony DeMeo from Nye County, Alan Veil from Lyon County, and Ed Kilgore from Humboldt County.  These four sheriffs have stepped forward on principle to support Nevada's right-to-carry permit holders in spite of opposition by the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association.

Please thank these four sheriffs and the NSLEOA for supporting SB 231. Contact information is provided below.
