Virginia: House Militia, Police and Public Safety Subcommittee #1 Will Hear Several Firearm Bills Tomorrow

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

On Thursday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Subcommittee #1 will hold a hearing on several bills of interest to Virginia gun owners, sportsmen and Second Amendment supporters.  The following bills will be considered by this subcommittee in the 4th Floor West Conference Room of the General Assembly Building.

The NRA supports the following bill:

House Bill 1557: Sponsored by Delegate Robert Marshall (R-13), HB 1557 would train designated individuals to carry concealed handguns on school property.

The NRA opposes the following bills that, if passed and enacted, will severely infringe on your Second Amendment rights:

House Bill 2025:  Sponsored by Delegate Patrick Hope (D-47), HB 2025 imposes a background check on all private firearm sales, including between family and friends.

House Bill 1693: Sponsored by Delegate Kaye Kory (D-38), HB 1693 removes exceptions for possessing certain unloaded firearms or knives in or upon a motor vehicle located at any elementary, middle or high school from the list of exceptions for possessing a weapon on school property. This would most dramatically affect hunters dropping off or picking up their children from school.

House Bill 2207:  Sponsored by Delegate Joseph Morrissey (D-74), HB 2207 would prohibit certain semi-automatic (pseudo “assault”) rifles and magazines capable of holding more than twenty rounds from being imported, sold, bartered or transferred.

House Bill 1326:  Sponsored by Delegate Luke Torian (D-52), HB 1326 would eliminate certain firearms safety courses that currently fulfill the resident and non-resident requirement for obtaining a concealed handgun permit.

House Bill 1662:  Sponsored by Delegate Mamye BaCote (D-95), HB 1662 would allow localities to adopt ordinances to prohibit firearms or ammunition in libraries.

Please contact your state Delegate to support or oppose the legislation listed above if he serves on the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Subcommittee #1. For help identifying your state Delegate, please click here.
