Nevada: Hearing on Anti-Gun Legislation Tomorrow

Monday, April 8, 2013

Act NOW to Stop Anti-Gun Bills!

Senate Bill 277, introduced by state Senator Ben Kieckhefer (R-16), would create a new category of persons who are prohibited from possessing any firearm or ammunition – without following proper due process procedures. The NRA opposes this bill as it creates a prohibition on exercise of a fundamental right immediately upon petition, prior to the person being properly adjudicated as mentally ill. Measures such as SB 277 set a dangerous precedent for depriving a citizen of any fundamental right without the state having to provide clear and convincing proof under law. SB 277 is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee tomorrow, April 9, at 3:30 p.m. in room 2149 of the Legislative Building in Carson City, located at 401 S. Carson Street.

Senate Bill 221, introduced by state Senator Justin Jones (D-9), has also been referred to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and is up for work session in tomorrow’s hearing.  SB 221 would criminalize private transfers of firearms.  This bill would require that a background check be conducted by the Central Repository for Nevada Records of Criminal History or by a federally licensed firearms dealer for every private transfer of a firearm to a person who does not possess a valid concealed weapons permit (CCW).

Please contact Committee members and urge them to oppose SB 277 and SB 221.  For more information on how to testify or submit testimony, please click here.  You can also submit your opinion on Nevada legislation by clicking here, and selecting the appropriate bill number.
