Nebraska: Pro-Gun Bills Voted Out of Committee This Week

This week, the Nebraska Judiciary Committee voted the following NRA-backed pro-gun bills favorably out of committee:

Legislative Bill 30: Sponsored by state Senator Beau McCoy (39), LB 30 would protect the privacy of gun owners by requiring that firearm possession, sale, use, registration, permit or application for a firearm permit be maintained as confidential and not considered a public record.  LB 30 passed out of committee without opposition.

Legislative Bill 289: Sponsored by state Senator Laura Ebke (32), LB 289 is critical pro-gun legislation that would create a state firearms preemption statute to ensure that firearms and ammunition laws are consistent throughout Nebraska.  This is much-needed legislation that would help prevent a complex patchwork of regulations across the state, currently making it difficult for responsible firearm owners to ensure they are following the law.  LB 289 also passed out of committee without opposition.

Given that the hearings for these bills occurred in the Judiciary Committee past the prioritization deadline in Nebraska, it is unlikely that LB 30 or LB 289 will see further action in the 2015 session.  However, as these bills passed the committee hurdle this week, both will potentially be eligible for consideration on General File early in the 2016 session.  Your NRA will continue to update you as to when these bills see further movement.

In the meantime, please contact the following members of the Nebraska Judiciary Committee and thank them for advancing both LB 30 and LB 289 through committee.
