Alabama: 2016 Regular Session Comes to an End

Last night, May 4, the Alabama Legislature adjourned sine die; ending the 2016 Regular Legislative Session.  In doing so, the Legislature drew the collective ire of tens-of-thousands of law-abiding gun owners residing across the state who must now wait another year until the provisions within Senate Bill 14 and Senate Bill 304 are brought before the legislative body for formal debate.

While disappointing, the 2016 regular legislative session was not completely without success for some law-abiding individuals who wish to exercise their Right-to-Carry without government-imposed fees.  In the waning hours of session, the Legislature passed House Bill 98.  Sponsored by state Representative David Standridge (R-Hayden), HB 98 will allow qualified, law-abiding, retired veterans to apply for and receive an Alabama concealed weapon license (CWL) without a fee.

Governor Robert Bentley (R) has 10 days, following adjournment, to consider and sign HB 98.  If Governor Bentley fails to sign HB 98 before 11:59 p.m. on May 14, his inaction will result in a pocket veto.

Please contact Governor Bentley and respectfully urge him to support the ability of those individuals who were willing to protect us abroad to exercise their right to self-defense, without a government-imposed fee, when they return home.

For those law-abiding gun owners who did not see their Right-to-Carry expanded in 2016, rest assured that your NRA-ILA will continue to work tirelessly in support of your Right to Keep and Bear Arms.  Please assist us in those efforts by continuing to contact your Sheriff and politely requesting his or her support for the provisions in SB 14 and SB 304.  The misguided Alabama Sheriffs Association remains the primary obstructive force in achieving an expansion of your Second Amendment rights.
