Virginia: Important Pro-Gun and Self-Defense Legislation Continues to Move Through the General Assembly

Several pro-gun bills have crossed over and are moving through the legislative process in both chambers of the General Assembly.  Last week, House Bills 1852 and 1853 passed through House of Delegates and are moving through the Senate.  Additionally, Senate Bills 1299, 1300 and 1023 all passed the Senate and were sent to the House of Delegates for consideration.  SB 1023 has been assigned to the House Militia Policing and Public Safety Committee.  Please contact members of the House committee in support of SB 1023!  Please click the “Take Action” button below to contact the committee members!

Senate Bill 1299, sponsored by state Senator Jill Holtzman Vogel, as well as House Bill 1852, sponsored by Delegate C. Todd Gilbert, would allow any person who is 21 or older, not prohibited from purchasing, possessing, or transporting a firearm and who are currently protected by an unexpired protective order to carry a concealed handgun for 45 days after the protective order was issued.  This would provide time for the victim to apply for their concealed carry permit.  Senate Bill 1300 and House Bill 1853 would provide funding for reimbursement of training expenses as well as information for those individuals seeking training under the protection of a protective order.

Additionally, Senate Bill 1023, sponsored by state Senator Richard Stuart, is currently sitting in the House Militia Policing and Public Safety committee.  This legislation would prohibit the sharing of information regarding Virginia concealed handgun permits (CHP) with law enforcement in states that do not recognize Virginia CHPs.  SB 1023 would also require the Department of State Police to maintain and publish an online list of states that recognize a Virginia concealed handgun permit.
