Connecticut: Massive Ammunition Tax Bill Introduced

Earlier in the legislative session, Proposed House Bill 5700 was introduced to impose a 50% tax on lawful ammunition sales.  Proposed HB 5700 has been referred to the Connecticut state Joint Committee on Finance, Revenue and Bonding, but has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.  Please contact committee members and urge them to OPPOSE Proposed HB 5700.  Click the “Take Action” button below to contact committee members.

Proposed House Bill 5700, introduced by Representative Jillian Gilchrist (D-18) and Senator Will Haskell (D-26), would impose a 50% tax on ammunition sales in Connecticut.  Such a measure would discourage law-abiding citizens from practicing regularly to be safe and proficient with their firearms for purposes such as self-defense, competition, and hunting.  It would also discourage recreational shooting by law-abiding citizens and make Connecticut retailers uncompetitive against retailers outside of the state.  It would not hinder criminals, who steal ammunition or acquire it in small quantities on the black market and who would not have Connecticut ammunition certificates to lawfully purchase ammunition and be subject to this tax.

Again, please contact committee members and urge them to OPPOSE Proposed HB 5700.
