Vermont: Waiting Period Legislation Passes House Committee

Vermont: Waiting Period Legislation Passes House Committee

Monday afternoon, the House Judiciary Committee passed S.169 on a 7-4 vote, setting up a potential gun debate on the House floor during the last days of the 2019 legislative session.  This bill would create a 24-hour waiting period on the purchase of handguns.  However, anti-gun groups are trying to make the bill apply to all firearms and increase the waiting period up to 72 hours.

There is no evidence that waiting periods are effective.  This bill would essentially end gun shows and banquets.  However, even more troubling, this legislation would put in jeopardy vulnerable individuals who have an urgent self-defense need.  This is a clear infringement on the constitutional right to self-defense.

Gun owners have continuously expressed disdain for this measure, and the bill had been stalled in the House Judiciary Committee for weeks.  However, leadership appears to be caving to anti-gun Progressives as the Legislature nears adjournment for the year.  There is speculation that the Legislature could end things as early as the end of the week.

Now is the time to make a stand.  We want to thank all of the gun owners who have made calls and sent emails already, but our work isn’t done yet.  Now is the time to contact your House members and respectfully ask him/her to oppose S.169, even if you have done so previously.   The gun banners will be hard at work until the final gavel falls, and we need to match and surpass their efforts.  Please contact your state Representatives immediately and request a “No Vote on S.169.”
