Alabama: Senate Committee Advances Constitutional Carry

Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7-4 to pass Senate Bill 1, the constitutional carry bill. It now goes to the full Senate for further consideration. As expected, it faced heavy opposition from sheriffs who are looking to protect their revenue stream, and are teamed up with out-of-state anti-gun radicals. This is an important, initial step this session that will keep Alabama on the path to joining the country’s 21 other constitutional carry states. Senate Bill 1 strengthens Alabamians’ right to self-defense by allowing any law-abiding adult who is at least 21-years old and legally eligible to obtain a carry permit, to carry a handgun without first having to obtain government permission. This ensures that citizens have their right to self-defense without red tape, delays, or fees. It does not change who is eligible to obtain a carry permit. It also does not affect previously issued permits, and allows citizens who still wish to obtain a permit in order to carry in other states recognizing Alabama’s permits, to do so.
