Wednesday, May 6, was a big day in Harrisburg for gun owners as the Senate took action on a couple important gun bills.
In the morning, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 9-5 to advance Senate Bill 357. This legislation would make the Keystone State a constitutional carry state, ensuring that citizens are able to exercise their right to self-defense without government red tape or delays. It would not affect previously issued carry permits, and would allow citizens who still wish to obtain a permit in order to carry in other states recognizing Pennsylvania permits, to do so. Twenty-nine states currently have permitless carry. The bill now moves to the full Senate for a vote.

Later in the day, the full Senate approved Senate Bill 822, which would strengthen the Commonwealth’s firearms preemption statute, on a 30-20 vote. Among other provisions, the bill would allow membership organizations to recover litigation costs when local governments are found to have violated or subverted the Commonwealth’s firearms preemption law. SB 822 has been an NRA priority to ensure consistency in firearm laws and regulations.
