New Mexico: Two Gun Control Measures Advance Out of Committees; Gun Owner Liability Bill To Be Voted on by New Mexico House Soon

Two NRA-opposed bills advanced from committee at the Roundhouse yesterday in Santa Fe.

House Bill 9 by Rep. Pamela Herndon (D-ABQ), a firearm owner liability bill, was voted out of the House Judiciary Committee on a 7-4 party line vote. The bill creates back-door gun storage requirements by imposing criminal penalties on firearms owners if a third-party minor displays, brandishes or injures someone with their firearm. Please thank State Representatives Ryan Lane (R-Aztec), Greg Nibert (R-Roswell, Bill Rehm (R-ABQ) and Andrea Reeb (R-Clovis) through the link above for opposing this measure.

House Bill 9 will be voted on by the full New Mexico House soon, so it is important that you contact your State Representatives and urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 9. For more information on the legislation, click here. If you don't know who your State Representative is, click here.

Senate Bill 116 by Sen. Carrie Hamblen (D-Las Cruces), which discriminates against law-abiding young adults aged 18-20 by prohibiting them from purchasing any semi-automatic firearm and which also bans anyone under the age of 21 from possessing any semi-automatic firearm (with limited exceptions), advanced from the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee on a 6-3 party line vote. Please thank State Senators Stuart Ingle (R-Portales), Gregg Schmedes (R-Tijeras) and David Gallegos (R-Eunice) through the link above for opposing this measure.

Senate Bill 116 now moves to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration. Please contact committee members and urge them to OPPOSE SB 116 as we await a hearing to be scheduled.
