Tomorrow, January 30th, House File 518, legislation that provides a much-needed enforcement mechanism to Iowa’s existing firearm preemption law, will be heard in the House Subcommittee on Public Safety. Please contact committee members and urge their SUPPORT for HF 518!
Iowa’s firearm preemption law prohibits political subdivisions from enacting an ordinance, motion, resolution, policy, or amendment regulating the ownership, possession, and use of a firearm that’s inconsistent with state law. Firearm preemption laws exist to protect citizens' Second Amendment rights and to ensure that there is clarity and consistency across the state of the laws regulating firearms.
House File 518 provides a monetary enforcement mechanism to aid in the implementation and encourage adherence to the existing preemption law. This is done by assigning a monetary value to the damages that occur when political subdivisions commit firearms regulation violations.
Again, please contact committee members and urge their SUPPORT for HF 518!
