Wyoming: Pro-Gun Bills Advance Through the Legislative Process

Today, Senate File 105 passed in committee with a vote of 8-1 and is scheduled for a second reading tomorrow. The bill would prohibit the use of merchant category codes for firearm-related transactions. Additionally, Senate File 73 was passed out of the House Judiciary Committee and is scheduled for a second reading tomorrow morning at 10 am Mountain Time. SF 73 would allow individuals who have had their firearm rights restored to qualify for a conceal carry permit. Please contact your legislator and urge them to SUPPORT SF 105 and SF 73 by selecting each Take Action button below.

SF 105 provides critical privacy protections on financial data for those purchasing firearms, firearm parts, and ammunition by prohibiting the use of firearm/ammunition specific merchant category codes throughout the state. The bill will prevent government entities and private corporations from collecting sensitive financial information from gun owners in Wyoming. Additionally, SF 105 provides remedies in cases where a financial institution violates provisions of the bill.

Collecting firearm retailer financial transaction data amounts to surveillance and registration of law-abiding gun owners. Those promoting this scheme are in favor of firearm and gun owner registrations. Therefore, it should be assumed that the goal of this program is to share all collected firearm retailer MCC data with government authorities and potentially private third parties that may include gun control organizations and anti-gun researchers. SF 73 amends eligibility requirements in Wyoming, by providing individuals who have had their firearm rights restored, the ability to qualify for a concealed carry permit. This legislation would support gun-owners who wish to fully exercise their Second Amendment rights.
