Yesterday, House File 2556 was passed in the Senate Judiciary Committee with a vote of 12-4 and is eligible for a vote on the Senate floor. This legislation would provide a much-needed enforcement mechanism to Iowa’s existing firearm preemption law. Please contact your senator and urge them to SUPPORT HF 2556 by using the Take Action button below.
HF 2556 provides an enforcement mechanism to ensure compliance with the existing firearm preemption law in Iowa. This is done by assigning a monetary value to the damages that occur when political subdivisions are in violation.
Currently, firearm preemption law in Iowa prevents political subdivisions from enacting any ordinance, motion, resolution, policy, or amendment regulating the ownership, possession, and use of a firearm that’s inconsistent with state law. Firearm preemption laws exist to protect citizens' Second Amendment rights and to ensure that there is clarity and consistency across the state regarding the regulation of firearms.
Once again, please contact your senator and urge them to SUPPORT HF 2556.
