Louisiana: Governor Landry Signs Pro-Second Amendment Legislation

In the past two weeks, Governor Jeff Landry signed Senate Bill 234Senate Bill 301, and House Bill 819, pro-Second Amendment legislation providing important protections for gun owners. NRA would like to thank Governor Landry for signing these critical pieces of legislation. NRA also thanks Senate President Cameron HenryHouse Speaker Phillip DeVillierSenator Blake Miguez, who authored SB 234 and SB 301, Representative Troy Romero, who co-authored SB 234 and SB 301, and Representative Lauren Ventrella, who authored HB 819.

SB 234 creates the Firearm Industry Non-Discrimination Act (FIND Act) that discourages companies, including banks, payment processors, insurers, and other financial services providers, from discriminating against members of the firearm and ammunition industries. This legislation prohibits businesses that engage in this practice from contracting with governmental entities in the Pelican State. The law will officially take effect on August 1, 2024.

SB 301 prohibits payment processors from using firearm/ammunition-specific merchant category codes. This is an important protection for gun owners, preventing abuse of private purchasing information by third parties. The law will officially take effect on August 1, 2024.

HB 819 provides that the state shall have the burden of proof in any criminal proceeding in which the justification of self-defense is raised. The law will officially take effect on August 1, 2024.

This was a historic year in the ongoing effort to protect and restore our rights. The successes clearly demonstrate the commitment to our Second Amendment rights and freedoms in the Pelican State. Your NRA-ILA is proud to have played a significant role in these achievements. Please take a moment to click on the links to the House & Senate primary authors and co-authors of these measures and send them a quick note of thanks for their hard work on behalf of our Second Amendment rights this session!
