Nebraska: Ammunition Excise Tax Bill Heard in Committee

This week, during a special session of the Unicameral Legislature, Legislative Bill 65, which would implement a 5% excise tax on all ammunition sales in the state of Nebraska, was introduced and heard in the Senate Revenue Committee. The committee could be voting on LB 65 at any time. Please contact your legislator today by using the Take Action button below and urge them to OPPOSE LB 65!

LB 65 is a property tax cash grab, saddled on the backs of gun owners. Proponents of LB 65 focus their support on the resources this legislation offers for wildlife conservation efforts and programs to provide support to those suffering from PTSD. That's only half the story and half of the fund's allocations. The other remaining 50% is allocated for a property tax cash fund.

Gun owners are already saddled with a variety of state and local taxes in addition to the 11% Pitman Robertson federal excise tax

The NRA has sued states like California for their unconstitutional excise taxes and this would most assuredly also face a legal challenge if enacted. Nebraska should be looking at ways to reduce the cost burden on Nebraskans wishing to exercise their constitutional rights instead of making it more costly and difficult. Property tax relief for Nebraskans is an admirable goal for the special session but doing so by saddling Nebraska gun owners with an unconstitutional tax on ammunition is not how to deliver that relief.
