Recently, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) and Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ-09) reintroduced the Gun Owner Registration Information Protection Act. This important legislation would prevent the federal government from funding or otherwise supporting the creation or maintenance of a state sponsored gun registry.
For decades, the federal government has been prohibited from operating a database of either firearms or firearm owners with the exception of certain items regulated by the National Firearms Act. This critical protection was put into place to ensure that law-abiding gun owners were not placed on government lists simply for exercising their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. As history has shown, firearm registries are the first step towards a gun confiscation.
Unfortunately, several states have chosen to maintain registries of law-abiding gun owners. This practice which is deeply concerning on its own, has also been shown to provide no benefit to law enforcement or a reduction in violent crime rates.
This important legislation would ensure that your federal tax dollars are not being used by these anti-gun states to maintain or create gun or gun owner registries. NRA-ILA thanks Senator Hyde-Smith and Representative Gosar for reintroducing this important protection.
NRA-ILA will continue to monitor this legislation and keep you up to date as it advances on the legislative path.
