On the night of May 14th, Governor Spanberger once again proved she has no concern for the right to keep and bear arms by signing SB749/HB217 - legislation that bans certain semi-automatic firearms—including many semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns—prohibits the sale of magazines exceeding 15 rounds, and prohibits possession by legal adults under the age of 21. This new law redefines and bans firearms in common use by law-abiding Virginians while also prohibiting the future sale and transfer of virtually all modern firearms. Previously, the legislature rejected amendments submitted by the Governor to this bill. Now with her signature, the law will take effect July 1, 2026.
The NRA has already taken legal action against this unconstitutional law before the ink has dried in both the State and the Federal Court systems.
Additionally, Governor Spanberger has also signed SB173/HB229, prohibiting the possession of any weapons in a hospital that provides mental health services or developmental services, and provides that any weapons seized in violation are forfeited to the Commonwealth.
As the oldest civil rights organization in the United States, the NRA is fully prepared to exhaust the state and federal judicial systems defending the Commonwealth and your Second Amendment rights against these egregious policies.
