A sex crime spree of 87 rapes came to an end when Randel Smith shot an intruder in the bedroom of his Galveston, Tex., home. Smith pretended to sleep when his wife spotted the interloper, but grabbed a .45 cal. revolver from under his pillow. When the man threatened him and his wife with a rifle, Smith opened fire, hitting the man in the shoulder. The rapist, who was described by one prosecutor as the most dangerous criminal he'd ever encountered, was sentenced to 214 years in prison.
