Pro-Gun Measures Currently Awaiting Committee Assignments in Missouri General Assembly!

Friday, January 12, 2007

The first few weeks of the 2007 General Assembly session have produced a number of pro-gun measures currently awaiting committee assignment. Of note, State Senator Bill Stouffer (R-21) has introduced Senate Bill 225, NRA-supported “Hunting Heritage Protection Areas Act,” that will prohibit localities from restricting hunting and firearms discharge within any 100-year floodplain, as well as to prohibit future Tax Increment Financed (TIF) projects within these critical wildlife habitats. In doing so, SB225 will protect numerous game species and ensure that some of our nation’s most important wildlife habitats are preserved for future generations of sportsmen.

Also, State Senator Jack Goodman (R-29) and State Representative Kenny Jones (R-117) have introduced Missouri’s “Castle Doctrine” legislation for 2007.   State Senator Goodman’s Senate Bill 62 and State Representative Jones’ House Bill 189 will ensure that law-abiding Missourians will not have a duty to retreat from a violent attacker, and may stand their ground and meet force with force. Additionally, each bill would provide civil and criminal immunity for a victim of violent crime who was justified in using force to defend him or herself.

Finally, State Senator Kevin Engler (R-3) has introduced Senate Bill 257, the “Missouri Disaster Recovery Protection Act.” SB257 will prohibit any government agency from regulating the lawful sale, possession, transfer, transport and carry of firearms during a declared emergency or disaster.

Please contact your lawmakers in Jefferson City at (573)-751-3824 and strongly urge them to support the above-mentioned legislation. We anticipate that additional pro-gun legislation will be offered during the coming weeks, and we will be sure to keep you informed of any new developments.
