Mississippi: NRA-ILA and State Legislative Leaders Urge Passage of Amendment 1 on November 4 to Establish a Constitutional Right to Hunt, Fish and Harvest Wildlife

Thursday, October 30, 2014

Today at the State Capitol in Jackson, the Mississippi Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, led by House Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks Committee Chairman, Scott Bounds (R-Philadelphia) hosted a press conference to urge support for passage of NRA-backed Amendment 1 on November 4 -- a state constitutional amendment establishing an individual right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife.

Governor Phil Bryant (R), Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves (R), House Speaker Philip Gunn (R) and representatives from pro-sportsmen organizations, including your NRA-ILA, were also in attendance to promote ratification of this important ballot measure.  Amendment 1 will ensure that future wildlife conservation and management decisions are based on sound science and will protect the state’s strong hunting heritage for generations to come.

Amendment 1 would add the following language to the Mississippi Constitution:

“The people have the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife, including by the use of traditional methods, subject only to laws and regulations that promote wildlife conservation and management and that preserve the future of hunting and fishing, as the Legislature may prescribe by general law. Public hunting and fishing shall be a preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife. This section may not be construed to modify any provision of law relating to trespass, property rights, the regulation of commercial activities or the maintenance of levees pursuant to Article 11.”

Election Day is now less than one week away.  It is critical that all Mississippi gun owners and sportsmen go to the polls on Tuesday, November 4 and vote YES on Amendment 1.  Help spread the word by emailing family, friends and fellow hunters in Mississippi the link to the website above and downloading flyers from our website supporting Amendment 1 for display at your local shooting or hunt club, outdoor retail store or community center.
