On Friday, July 22, Governor Brown once again disappointed law-abiding gun owners and Second Amendment supporters by signing Assembly Bill 857.
Assembly Bill 857 will require an individual to request a serial number from DOJ for home-built firearms. This unique serial number is required to be engraved or affixed to the firearm in a manner that meets or exceeds those requirements imposed on licensed manufacturers. These rigorous standards will likely price the average citizen out of the market while doing nothing to dissuade criminals. The idea that criminals who are already obliterating serial numbers off illegal firearms would apply to the Department of Justice for a serial number to affix to a homebuilt firearm is a pipe dream. The criminal activities that are targeted are already illegal.
The true target of the anti-gun community is obvious, law-abiding gun owners. Because we know laws don’t stop criminals.
