Carry Permit Bill Passes Senate Judiciary Committee

Carry Permit Bill Passes Senate Judiciary Committee

On February 21st, the Indiana state Senate Judiciary Committee passed House Bill 1424 with a 7-3 vote.  HB 1424 will now head to the Senate Appropriations committee for further consideration.

House Bill 1424, authored by Representative Timothy Wesco (R-21) and sponsored by Senator Rodric Bray (R-37), would extend the duration of a 4-year License to Carry a Handgun (LTCH) to five years and remove fees for lifetime licenses.

This legislation will move Indiana LTCH closer to compliance with federal law to make it eligible for NICS exemption, which would ensure that law-abiding permit holders who have been fully vetted and have undergone a NICS check may purchase or receive a firearm from a firearm dealer without the delays sometimes associated with an additional NICS check.  The permit itself acts as verification that the holder has undergone a background check and is neither prohibited under state or federal law from possessing a firearm.

Your NRA will keep you updated on this bill as it continues to move through the Legislature.  Stay tuned to www.nraila.org and your email inbox for further updates on issues affecting your Second Amendment and hunting rights in Indiana.
