Arizona: Pro-Gun Bills Pass Legislature, Head to Governor Hobbs for Signature

The Arizona Legislature recently passed several pro-gun bills that will now head to Governor Hobbs for her signature. Please use the TAKE ACTION button below to contact Governor Katie Hobbs and urge her to sign these critical bills into law!

The following bills have passed both chambers of the legislature and will soon be transmitted to the Governor:

Senate Bill 1014 amends Arizona’s definition of “Prohibited weapon” to no longer include suppressors. Current state law already exempts suppressors that are possessed, manufactured, or transported in compliance with federal law, which tightly regulates them. 

Senate Bill 1020 prohibits governing boards of universities, colleges, and community colleges from enacting or enforcing any policy preventing the carrying of concealed handguns by carry permit holders or preventing citizens from lawfully transporting or storing firearms in locked vehicles hidden from view. Adults who are officially licensed to carry a firearm for self-defense should not be prevented from doing so just because they seek higher education.

Senate Bill 1143 aims to protect the privacy of firearm purchasers by prohibiting the use of specific merchant category codes (MCCs) that identify transactions at firearm retailers. The bill defines key terms, including "firearm retailer," "merchant category code," and "payment card," to establish clear guidelines. If passed, HB 1143 will prevent payment card networks and related entities from assigning or requiring MCCs that distinguish firearm retailers from other merchants. Violations can result in civil penalties and injunctions, enforceable by the Attorney General or county attorneys.

Unfortunately, these pro-gun bills head to the Governor’s desk on the heels of her already vetoing Senate Bill 1705. SB 1705 would have strengthened Arizona’s firearm preemption laws by allowing a court to impose a $5,000 civil penalty on government officials who knowingly violate state firearm regulations.
