On Monday, the Wisconsin State Assembly introduced legislation that would make it a Class A misdemeanor to possess a firearm in any building or on the grounds of a public or private university or college. The bill has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety for consideration. Contact committee members today and urge them to oppose this legislation!
Currently, those with a valid concealed carry permit are exempt from the ban on possessing a firearm on college and university campuses, unless the institution posts a sign prohibiting it. The penalty for violating the law is currently trespassing with a fine of up to $1,000.
AB 427 would eliminate this exemption for permit holders entirely. It also removes the authority of colleges and universities to decide for themselves whether to prohibit concealed carry on their campuses. Instead, the bill creates a blanket ban on firearm possession in any building or on the grounds of a public or private university or college, making violations a Class A misdemeanor.
This legislation criminalizes lawful carry on campus and strips away existing protections, leaving only narrow exceptions.
