Texas Election Information

Wednesday, January 2, 2002

Happy New Year!  It seems elections are already upon us in the Lone Star State.  January 2 is the filing deadline for candidates in the 2002 elections for state and federal offices.  NRA`s Political Victory Fund is monitoring the filings and sending questionnaires on issues of importance to gun owners and sportsmen out to candidates that have filed for those offices.  NRA-PVF endorsements will be communicated to members prior to the March 12 primary and our Political Preference Chart, outlining candidate ratings and endorsements for the November 5 general election, will be delivered to members later this fall.

This year on the federal level, Texas will have a U.S. Senate race and critical congressional races that will determine whether we have pro-gun majorities representing us in Washington.  On the state level, every statewide office, state senate and state house seat will be on the ballot.  Redistricting could produce as many as 40-50 new members in the Texas House of Representatives alone!  Make no mistake -- gun owners and sportsmen will play a critical role in these upcoming elections.

Take the following actions right now to make a difference in this year`s elections:

(1) If you are not registered to vote, do so TODAY!  Visit the Secretary of State`s website www.sos.state.tx.us and click on Elections or Voter Information for registration materials and procedures.  If you are already registered to vote, then register at least three of your hunting buddies, fellow gun club members or pro-Second Amendment neighbors who are not -- and make sure they do so before the February 11 deadline for voting in the March primary elections.

(2) Attend pro-Second Amendment candidate events in your area!  Be sure to introduce yourself to the candidate or campaign manager as an NRA member and pro-Second Amendment supporter.  Wearing your NRA cap or showing your membership card usually does the trick.  Find out how to volunteer for the campaign.  If you have questions on a candidate`s voting record or NRA-PVF rating, or if you have information to share about a candidate in your area, call NRA-ILA`s Grassroots Division at 1-800-392-VOTE.

(3) Forward this email to at least three fellow gun owners and sportsmen.  Encourage them to visit NRA-ILA`s website www.nraila.org and sign up to receive FREE legislative and election email alerts throughout the year.
