Nevada: Pro-Gun Omnibus Bill Will Proceed in Last Days of Session

Thursday, June 2, 2011

Assembly Bill 282, the four-point omnibus bill brought forward by Assembly Speaker John Oceguera (D-16), has been scheduled for a conference committee hearing tomorrow, June 3, at 3:00 p.m. in the Legislative Building in Carson City.  As reported earlier, the Assembly did not concur with the Senate amendments and AB 282 was sent to a conference committee to work out the differences between the Assembly and Senate versions.

AB 282 is a pro-gun omnibus measure that would:
1.  ensure that Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permit holders’ names and addresses remain confidential;
2.  revise Nevada state law to allow the carrying of any semi-automatic pistol, like you can with a revolver, once you have qualified for a CCW permit with a semi-automatic pistol;
3.  allow carrying of firearms in Nevada state parks; and
4.  statutorily mandate a background investigation (which is currently being done by all Nevada sheriffs) for CCW permit renewals for the purpose of reinstating the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) exemption for Nevada, thus ensuring that permit holders do not have to go through a point-of-contact check for every firearm purchased, as long as the CCW permit is valid.

We are pleased to report that with generous and open input from Speaker Oceguera and NRA representatives on the ground in Carson City, a compromise was reached to the benefit of Nevada CCW holders by ensuring that all fees passed on to applicants for initial and renewal permits are disclosed and limited.  Further, the existing administrative fees will remain unchanged.

Please contact members of the Conference Committee below and ask that they support the “NRA/Oceguera Plan” for Assembly Bill 282, and also take the time to contact Speaker Oceguera and thank him for his support.
