West Virginia: Mayor Danny Jones and Charleston Newspapers are Fighting Against Your Gun Rights

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Earlier this month, we reported that Charleston Mayor Danny Jones seems to be doing the bidding for anti-gun extremist New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg by actively opposing House Bill 2760 that overwhelmingly passed in the state House by a 94-4 vote on March 11.  Do not fall victim to his misleading rhetoric.  HB 2760 is an important pro-gun reform.

HB 2760 would strengthen current firearms preemption laws by removing existing “grandfather” clauses for certain localities to ensure a uniform set of firearms laws statewide.  This would eliminate restrictions such as the three-day waiting period and gun rationing for handgun purchases in Charleston that only serve to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens.  HB 2760 is long overdue for residents and businesses in cities like Charleston and Martinsburg where they are subject to unreasonable and restrictive local rules and regulations on legal firearms.

HB 2760 does not create any new or special exceptions for firearm owners.  It will not allow the carrying of firearms in places not currently allowed by West Virginia law.  It will not create a new set of standards for the lawful possession and use of a firearm. HB 2760 will simply make the gun laws in Charleston and three other cities that currently have and enforce local gun control ordinances consistent and uniform with all other localities in rest of the state.

Don’t let Bloomberg’s views on guns that are being voiced by Danny Jones and the Charleston newspapers dictate your gun rights in this legislative session.

We need you to call AND e-mail your two state Senators TODAY.  Respectfully urge them to support HB 2760 and ask them how they plan to vote on HB 2760.
