Iowa: ATV Carry Bill Passes Final Concurrence Vote

Today, the Iowa House of Representatives voted to concur with the amended Senate version of House File 2283, the ATV Carry Bill, with a 77-18 vote.

Current law prohibits any Iowan from carrying a firearm while riding an ATV or snowmobileIf an individual can lawfully own and possess a firearm, they should not have restrictions placed on their ability to exercise their fundamental right to self-defense outside of their home or in a recreational vehicle.  HF 2283 would recognize law-abiding individuals’ right to self-defense by allowing citizens to carry a firearm while riding in an ATV or snowmobile.

The Senate amended HF 2283 to include a provision that would require individuals who are carrying and riding an ATV or snowmobile to use a retention holster to ensure that the firearm is secure while the vehicle is in use.  This amendment was necessary to warrant the bills advancement through the Iowa Legislature.  HF 2283 previously passed the House with a 78-20 vote and the Senate with a 46-4 vote.  HF 2283 will now go to Governor Terry Branstad (R) for his consideration and signature.

Your NRA-ILA would like to thank state Representatives Matt Windschitl and Brian Best for their leadership and unwavering support of House File 2283 throughout the legislative process.  Additionally, your NRA-ILA would like to thank Speaker Linda Upmeyer, House Majority Leader Chris Hagenow, Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal and Senator Dick Dearden for their work on bringing HF 2283 to the floor of their respective chambers.
