U.S. Senator Moran Reaffirms Senate Opposition to U.N. Arms Trade Treaty

As we recently reported and warned would happen, following the election, the Obama administration moved forward with its plans to support a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. On Wednesday, November 7--the day after Election Day--the U.S. Mission to the U.N. made clear its support for renewed ATT negotiations, casting a vote in favor of a resolution that calls for a "Final United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty" to be held in New York City from March 18-28.

In response to President Obama's acknowledged intent to resume negotiating an ATT, this week, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) reiterated the grave concern that he and fellow pro-gun senators have regarding the dangers posed to Americans' Second Amendment rights by a U.N. ATT.

In a press release on Thursday, Moran said, "On July 26 of this year, 50 of my Senate colleagues joined me in sending a powerful message to the Obama administration: A U.N. Arms Trade Treaty that does not protect our firearm freedoms will fail in the Senate. Our bipartisan warning to President Obama and Secretary Clinton demonstrated clear and sufficient opposition to ratification of a treaty that in any way restricts the rights of law-abiding American gun owners. When the U.N. Conference dissolved this summer without a treaty, it was clearly a positive conclusion for American gun owners and I'm glad we were able to steer the Administration toward this outcome."

Bill Advances to Stop EPA from Regulating Your Ammunition--Contact Your U.S. Senators in Support of S. 3525, the "Sportsmen's Act of 2012"

When Congress reconvened this week, one of the first items the U.S. Senate voted on was S. 3525, "The Sportsmen's Act of 2012." As we reported last week, S. 3525 is an essential piece of legislation focused on the expansion and enhancement of hunting, recreational fishing and shooting on federal public land. But it's more than that.

Of critical importance is the fact that, in addition to promoting land access, S. 3525 would amend the "Toxic Substances Control Act" to prevent this and future administrations from using the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate the right of hunters, shooters and anglers to use traditional ammunition and fishing tackle. The bill would amend the law to clarify that the EPA does not have the authority to regulate shot, bullets or sport fishing equipment.

Dim Journalists Rely Too Heavily on Sunlight Study

With plenty of legitimate post-election stories needing to be reported, the anti-gun media have instead chosen to highlight a study that misleads readers about the effectiveness of NRA campaign spending.

No one is disputing that the result of the presidential contest was a loss for Second Amendment supporters, but that does not negate the strong message pro-gun voters sent on November 6th. We maintained pro-gun majorities in both houses of the United States Congress.

Gun Owners Enter the Fight of Our Lives

The NRA has been saying all along that Barack Obama would unleash an assault on our Second Amendment freedoms if he won a second term. It sure didn't take long for him to prove us right.

This week, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox wrote an op-ed for the Daily Caller regarding the Obama administration's attack our gun rights, and the fight for our rights we are sure to face in the future.

Anti-Gunners' Ratings Miss the Mark Again

It used to be only the Brady Campaign that "graded" the states on their gun laws. Now, the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (previously the Legal Community Against Violence, a group of anti-gun lawyers in San Francisco, funded by the Joyce Foundation and some of the other usual suspects) has gotten into the act.

And it is indeed an "act," as the anti-gun groups' "grades" are pure sideshow--frivolous distractions from serious discussions about the (non-)relationship between gun control laws and crime take place.

Apparently, it wasn't a good idea for the anti-gunners to start punching numbers into their calculators just after getting off the roller-coaster, because both groups gave bad grades to most states, even though violent crime rates have declined for the last 20 years and are relatively low today.

UK Magazine Retailer Rescinds Age Restrictions

Following a campaign by UK shooters, the UK retailer WH Smith is backpedaling from its decision to bar the sale of shooting sports magazines to customers under the age of 14. In early October, WH Smith caved to the will of the radical animal rights group, Animal Aid, after a campaign by the organization that smeared the shooting sports and likened sporting magazines to pornography.

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation announced last week that WH Smith was quietly removing "till prompts" that had required a cashier to check a purchaser's age for the purchase of shooting sports magazines. The change comes after a BASC email and social media campaign that included a petition with 12,000 signatures coordinated by one of BASC's Young Shots members.
